Describe a routine
Use the present simple for regular activities. With he, she, or it, usually add -s to the verb. Use do or does in questions, followed by the base form of the verb. Time expressions such as every day and usually often signal a routine.
I study English every evening. My sister studies with me. Does she study on Fridays?
Describe an action in progress
Use am, is, or are plus a verb ending in -ing for an action happening now. Choose am with I, is with he/she/it, and are with you/we/they. Compare a usual activity with what is happening at this moment.
I usually walk to class, but today I am taking the bus. Sara is reading now. We are waiting outside.
Check the whole sentence
Do not choose a tense from one word alone. Ask whether the sentence describes a repeated activity or an action in progress. Some verbs, such as know and want, are normally used in the simple form when they describe a state.
I know the answer. I want a quiet place to study. I am looking for a free desk right now.
