Learn words in partnerships
A collocation is a combination of words that commonly occur together. In study contexts, useful combinations include make progress, take notes, meet a deadline, and pay attention. Learning the whole phrase can make word choice easier than translating each word separately.
I take notes during lectures. Regular practice helps me make progress. I plan my week carefully to meet each deadline. I pay attention to examples that show how a word is used.
Connect meaning with use
Keep a short phrase notebook. For each collocation, write its meaning and one sentence that is true for you. Review by covering the verb and recalling it from the noun and context. Notice grammar too: progress is normally uncountable when it means improvement, so say make progress rather than make a progress.
Phrase: meet a deadline Meaning: finish something by the required time Personal sentence: I start assignments early so I can meet the deadline without rushing.
