1. Start with the receiving programme

Open the official language-requirements page for every programme on your shortlist. Record the complete test name and accepted delivery method. A university-wide list may not answer a department's requirement. If a test is absent or wording is unclear, obtain a written answer from admissions before making it the basis of your plan.

02

2. Separate language from admissions testing

Create two boxes in your plan: English evidence and other admissions tests. IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, C1 Advanced and LanguageCert Academic belong in the first comparison. GRE General belongs in the second: its verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing serve a different admissions purpose. Check whether your programme needs either box, both or neither.

03

3. Compare requirements without mixing scales

For each accepted option, write the required overall result next to each skill minimum. Keep each test's own scale; do not convert a practice percentage into an official score. Add any restrictions on score age, combined results or retakes. Your useful target is the exact set of requirements your application must satisfy.

04

4. Try the actual task types

Use an official sample for two shortlisted tests. Complete a reading task, write a response and try a speaking activity with the intended input method. Note where the friction comes from: unfamiliar instructions, typing, microphone use or language knowledge. TOEFL materials should match its current 2026 format. Select on observed task fit, alongside acceptance, rather than an online claim that one test is easy.

05

5. Check practical access and total cost

Check the provider's current booking service for your test location, identification rules and any access arrangements you need. Build a budget from live quotes for the test, travel, accommodation and a possible second attempt. Confirm entry requirements separately for an overseas trip. acejx's destination pages are research prompts, with no reserved seats or confirmed venues.

6. Write a decision and a fallback

Complete this sentence: I chose this test because my programmes accept it, I have tried its tasks, and I can access it before the required deadline. Then name one fallback if availability changes. Set a date to review the decision after a week of focused practice. If the acceptance evidence is incomplete, resolve that gap before paying.
