1. Start with the ID you will present
Open the valid identification document required for your test location and citizenship. Read the Latin given-name and surname fields carefully. Do not create a new transliteration from memory or shorten a multi-part family name for convenience. Write a private reference note with the spelling, then use the provider's field-by-field instructions to enter it.
2. Follow the form's own naming rules
Look for guidance on middle names, initials, accents and a missing given name or surname. These rules are not identical across providers. ETS and Pearson publish their own account and identification instructions. If your name does not fit the form or your passport has an unusual layout, contact official support before inventing punctuation or creating a second account.
3. Compare four records side by side
Compare your required ID, provider account, test booking and application account. Check full names, date of birth and other identity fields each service requires. Read each character rather than scanning for a familiar shape. Save a note of which records you checked and when. A consistent email address can help you organise correspondence, but it does not repair an identity mismatch.
4. Explain older or different names
Check whether transcripts, certificates or references use a previous spelling or legal name. Make a list of the affected documents and ask the receiving institution which explanation or evidence it needs. Follow its official upload process. Do not edit the name on an issued transcript yourself or assume that a translator's choice automatically resolves the difference.
5. Resolve a mismatch before the appointment
Use the provider's support channel, state the discrepancy clearly and follow its secure document instructions. Keep the case number and written outcome. ETS warns that a registration and ID mismatch can prevent testing; Pearson also requires matching details. Do not rely on an informal promise that staff will overlook it. Check the amended account and booking again after support responds.
6. Repeat the check after a passport change
If you renew a passport or legally change your name, review every active test booking and application. Ask each service whether its account record, document number or supporting evidence needs updating. Confirm the new document will be in your possession on test day. Share identity documents only through the official process that requests them; you do not need to send acejx a passport to use this guide.
